JERRY GOLDSMITH, Star Trek: First Contact (Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Sir Patrick Stewart died today. He was 86 years old. For fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the feeling of loss is beyond words.

We were still reeling from the death of Walter Koenig (the original Star Trek’s Mr. Chekov) when we were knocked flat again. This is too much for a Trekker.

There are those who won’t understand our fandom, and what Sir Patrick’s loss means to us. I’ll offer up my personal feelings.

Yes, Sir Patrick was Professor X, Ebeneezer Scrooge, a Shakespearian actor of the highest order, and the player of countless other roles. But to me, he’ll always be Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Oh Captain, my Captain!

Picard made me want to be a better person. A smarter person. Because of him, I dug deeper into history and became a student of Shakespeare. I was reminded of the importance of diplomacy, fairness, equality, and justice for everyone. It’s something I carried into my career and it made me a police officer anyone could be proud of, as opposed to what finds its way to television far too often.

First Contact is my favorite TNG movie and soundtrack. It’s also the movie where Captain Picard goes through his deepest crisis. Sir Patrick’s acting was above reproach. It’s the Star Trek: TNG movie I go to most often.

As for the music, it’s perfect for the movie. It captures the emotion of every scene perfectly. I can’t help but freeze in place whenever I hear the opening theme. Make the most of it. Jerry Goldsmith can write a movie score!

Take a moment to be thankful that we lived during the same time as Sir Patrick Stewart.

Live long and prosper. 🖖🏾
