Few bands mean more to me than XTC. They’re my favorite band from my “college rock” days of the eighties.
By the mid-eighties, I had all but rejected pop music for progressive rock and jazz. Pop had nothing to offer me other than stupid songs about things I didn’t care about and sappy love songs crying “baby, baby, baby.” I’d rather listen to something more meaningful in 5/4 or 9/8 time.
But then there was XTC.
Out of nowhere one day in ‘88, a U.S. Air Force buddy raced to my dorm room and pounded on the door. He knew of my love for music and declared, “You HAVE to hear this song!” The tune in question was “Dear God.” My mind was blown. My religious mother would’ve had a stroke. But I loved it.
And just like that, I was a fan for life.
I love so many XTC songs, but here are my top three. I’m sure you have others. Feel free to tell me about them in the comments.

For me, the best of the bunch was “Making Plans for Nigel”.
