THE GIG: Caspian
THE PLACE: House of Blues, Chicago Illinois
THE DATE: July 25, 2024
Caspian is one of those bands. If they’re nearby, I’m going to see them. Every time. Their music reaches the very depth of my soul.
I’ve had the privilege of seeing this band live twice. The music was glorious both times. And both times, photography seemed all but impossible. Caspian likes to play under a shroud of fog and darkness. I would image their message with this is, “Just listen. Put your phone away and have an experience.” They’re not wrong, even if sometimes I try to do both. Based on what I saw from the audience, it works!
What follows are my attempts at capturing Caspian (which wound up mostly of Phillip Jamieson, who was standing directly in front of me) with my iPhone at the House of Blues in Chicago last summer. What I once found frustrating I now rather enjoy. Go figure.

As it happens, a scour of the archives revealed a few shots I took a couple of years ago. Again, I was situated in front of Jamie. But I was able to see a little better this time. Now and then.

The lighting (or lack thereof) usually created phenomena like The Headless Drummer.

Caspian can be quite the photogenic band, even when they’re invisible.
