Trey Gunn is a hoot.
Of all the musicians I’ve interviewed, Trey ranks among the most fun. Our chat wasn’t always “lol” funny, but I always felt like there was something bubbling underneath.
I think it’s because I felt a real kinship with Trey. We grew up listening to a lot of the same music. It’s not just a thrill to learn you have a lot in common with one of your favorite musicians. It’s validating. You find yourself thinking that your musical choices haven’t been a complete waste of time. And it fills your heart with joy.
I’d wanted to talk to Trey for quite some time. I’ve always been captivated by his Warr Guitar skills as part of King Crimson, as a solo artist, and with the many projects he has with drummer Pat Mastelotto.
Then there are the projects Trey did with Robert Fripp, and The Security Project, a Peter Gabriel tribute act that offered up fascinating renditions of Gabriel deep cuts. Multi-faceted, indeed!
Time tends to slip away when you’re enjoying yourself, so I was a little surprised to see how long Trey and I chatted. Not that it bothers me. It shouldn’t bother anyone else either!
So, please enjoy my CirdecSongs chat with Trey Gunn. I certainly appreciate his enthusiasm toward making it happen.
