What in the world is post-rock?
I don’t know if I can even put the definition into words. All I know is, I love it!
While it is a complete and utter cliche, I’ll let britanica.com take a swing at it. Theirs is as good a definition as any.
“The term post-rock was coined in 1994 by music critic Simon Reynolds in his discussion of the music of Talk Talk and Bark Psychosis. Post-rock generally applied to bands that used the typical instruments of a rock band—two guitars, a bass, and drums—with nontraditional rhythms, melodies, and chord progressions.”
Okay, then.
I would add that the music is usually highly emotional, and often a little downtrodden. But it works for me. I can use it in the foreground and the background. Regardless, you’ll find yourself engaging with the music on one level or another. And that’s what matters.
But enough jibber-jabber. Here are some of my favorite post-rock tunes of all time. Grab a tissue. Some of this stuff is gonna hit you square in the heartstrings.
