Scenes from the Gig: Up Close and Personal, vol. 4

Here we go again.

Did I mention that I’ve been to a lot of concerts? Perhaps I mentioned that I’ve taken a lot of photos at these shows? Well, I wasn’t kidding.

One of these days, I’m going to look back and realize just how fortunate I’ve been. Not just because I’ve been able to see so many shows, but that I’ve been able to see them from so close! Sure, I sacrifice just a little in terms of sound when I’m up against the stage. The PA system is often behind me, meaning I’m getting the sound the amplifiers and monitors (assuming the band isn’t using in-ear monitors). But time and time again, it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

I’m often asked why I don’t like to go to concerts in stadiums or arenas. Well, the photos you’ve seen in this series should answer that question. To say nothing of my sincere belief that smaller venues tend to breed better performances. The bands tend to be hungrier, as it were. Their playing is more passionate and they haven’t become parodies of themselves. No one ever seems to going through the motions. What I lose in pyrotechnics I tend to gain in musical performance.

Fair trade.

I’m also better able to establish a connection with the musicians in a smaller room. When I go to a show, it’s not about the party. I’m there for the music and the musicians. So, you could say the audience is a lot more sincere, too. The energy can seem almost tangible, and the musicians are able to pick up on it. Never underestimate the value of eye contact between musician and fan. It’s very, very real!

So, here’s another batch of photos taken with various iPhones between 2017 and this year. There’s nothing more for me to add.

Let’s go!
