Scenes from the Gig: Up Close and Personal, vol. 3

You don’t know how many photos you’ve taken until you try to organize them.

I’m well aware that I’ve taken literally thousands of concert photos over the past seven or so years. Heck, I took more than two thousand pictures at Progstock 2023 alone! That’s plenty exciting, but there’s one small problem: I’ve been horribly disorganized.

For reasons that have completely eluded me, I’ve failed to put photos from each show into individual files. This leads to two separate nightmares: I struggle at times to find what I’m looking for; and more than once, I’ve forgotten the name of the band I was shooting or the names of the people in said band.^

I thought this wouldn’t go beyond three volumes. Four volumes, tops. But in “narrowing down” potential photos for this volume, I still had right at two hundred pictures I want to publish! Going beyond 25 pictures per post seems a little mind-numbing to me. So, it looks like this will be a weekly (or at least bi-weekly) feature.

With that in mind, here is the next batch of concert pics, all taken with an iPhone. The cover shot is of Corey Glover and Doug Wimbish of Living Colour, taken at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in St. Louis. You’ll see more from that gig below. They are some of my all-time favorite shots.

Here we go …

Les Claypool, taken at Delmar Hall in St. Louis
Jeff Parker, taken at The Constellation in Chicago
Victor Wooten, taken at The Old Rockhouse in St. Louis
Doug Wimbish (Living Colour), taken at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater
Percy Jones, taken at the Old Rockhouse
Johnnie Luca (Adrian Belew Power Trio), taken at City Winery in Chicago
Courtney Swain, the taken at Fubar in St. Louis
Marnie Sher, taken at Lincoln Hall in Chicago
Vernon Reid (Living Colour), taken at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater
Julie Slick (Adrian Belew Power Trio), taken at City Winery
Tony Levin (The Levin Brothers), taken at Reggie’s Comedy Shack in Chicago
Bob Nyswonger, taken at Latitudes in Cincinnati
Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth (Bent Knee), taken at Schubas in Chicago
Marc Ribot, taken at Thalia Hall in Chicago
Ryo Okumoto and Mike Keneally (Progject), taken at the Arcada Theater in St. Charles, Illinois
Mike Rataj (Sons of Ra), taken backstage at Metal Monkey in Romeoville, Illinois
Corey Glover (Living Colour), taken at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater
Chris Siebold, taken at Reggie’s Comedy Shack
Steve Hackett, taken at the Copernicus Theater in Chicago
Doug Pinnick (Kings X), taken at the Arcada Theater

^ I’m actually going to create a separate piece featuring these “unknown” musicians. Hopefully, they’ll see the pictures, then reach out and set me straight. This kind of thing almost always applies to the warmup acts, many of which are quite good and deserve recognition.
